“Sơn ta” is a material of lacquer derived from Rhus succedanea, which grow abundantly in the midlands of the North of our country. Ancient Vietnamese people used lacquer in handicrafts, covering and beautifying objects. Lacquer was present in the royal court, temples, and entered the lives of the people, from the purpose of covering and preserving objects to beauty. Lacquer became a painting material when artists and artisans of Indochina Fine Arts College researched how to mix and turn lacquer into an academic material, this could be considered the beginning of Vietnamese lacquer painting.
In the historical stream of lacquer, continuing the research achievements of artists and artisans at Indochina Fine Arts College, the work “Return with glory” of artist Nguyễn Khang is a typical example of Vietnamese lacquer art, depicting the beauty of Vietnamese history, a precious heritage of modern Vietnamese fine arts.
